The Dallas Cowboys are all set to travel to Oxnard, California again for another edition of their training camp. But why do they go to California for their training camp?

There is no official reason the Cowboys hold their training camp in California, but this year's trip will not be a new journey for the team. Dallas players and coaches have traveled to Oxnard 19 times for camp since 2001, according to Dallas Morning News.

It also won't be the last trip to California for preseason practices.

The Cowboys signed a five-year extension with the City of Oxnard, per the Dallas Morning News. The team will continue to hold their training camp in the Southern California city through the 2030 season.

According to the report, the Cowboys will pay Oxnard $75,000 per year to host their training camp.

Here's a potential reason why the Cowboys hold their preseason workouts in California rather than Texas:

Why is Dallas Cowboys training camp in California?

If you're looking for the person responsible for the Cowboys heading west this time of year, maybe you should look no further than Mother Nature. Temperatures may simply be too hot in Texas for outdoor practice.

Over the last 20 years, mean temperatures in Oxnard have been roughly 20 degrees cooler than weather in the Dallas area over the same span, according to data collected by the National Weather Service.

Average Oxnard temperature in July (2000-2024): 67.8 degrees Fahrenheit

Average Dallas temperature in July (2000-2024): 87.3 degrees

Average Oxnard temperature in August (2000-2024): 68.3 degrees

Average Dallas temperature in August (2000-2024): 87.7 degrees

The trend is similar when looking at average max temperatures in July and August over the last 25 years. Temperatures in Oxnard peak, on average, in the mid-80s. In Dallas, temps commonly soar above 100 degrees.

Average Oxnard max temperature in July (2000-2024): 84 degrees

Average Dallas max temperature in July (2000-2024): 103 degrees

Average Oxnard max temperature in August (2000-2024): 84 degrees

Average Dallas max temperature in August (2000-2024): 105 degrees
