Malcolm-Jamal Warner's tragic death at the age of 54 has been confirmed as "asphyxia by submersion" by local authorities.

The Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) shared in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that they "removed the body of a man who apparently died as a result of asphyxiation by submersion" who was later identified as Warner.

The Cosby Show and The Resident star "entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current," according to "preliminary information" reviewed by the OIJ. "The man was rescued by bystanders and taken to shore, where he received treatment from the Costa Rican Red Cross. However, he was declared lifeless at the scene."

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to the OIJ.

Costa Rican National Police first told ABC News that Warner had died in an accidental drowning while on a family vacation, which a source confirmed to EW.

In the hours since the prolific actor's death, tributes from his esteemed fans and friends have poured in.

Jennifer Love Hewitt, who costarred opposite Warner during his four-episode, 2024 arc on 9-1-1, expressed her grief on social media, writing over an image of the actor, "This hurts my heart. A gentleman, an incredible talent and we were so lucky to have him in the 9-1-1 family. Heartbroken and sending love to his family."

Jamie Foxx wrote on Instagram that he's "Speechless on this one. Rest in power, my brother."

Sherri Shepherd, who played Warner's spouse on Lifetime's Sherri, said, "As someone who grew up on TV, Malcolm remained one of the most-grounded people I've ever met in our business. To know Malcolm was to know a renaissance man that possessed humor, grace, humility and deep cultural appreciation. He was just a good guy! His passing is a true loss to the Hollywood community. He was a proud girl dad and loved his daughter so much. To his family, friends and all who loved him—my heart is with you."

In the last episode of his Not All Hood podcast released before his death, Warner chose to celebrate Black excellence and complicate conceptions of "the hood."

"The concept is, like, what the media shows us is one side of, you know, Black culture and it's the hood side. The hood side ultimately historically is what has always created American culture, right? It gets co-opted from the hood and then it becomes mainstream," he said. But he was sure to assure listeners, "Ain't nothing wrong with the hood."
