Richard Gere's dad was no preacher, but he certainly was full of spirit.
The Emmy-nominated actor, 76, opened up about his relationship with his late father, Homer Gere, in an interview with GQ magazine published Monday, Oct. 13. Homer Gere died in March 2023 at the age of 100, according to Syracuse.com.
"I grew up in a Methodist house, with deeply compassionate people. Everyone thought my dad was going to become a minister," Gere told the magazine. "He didn't, but he was very involved with the church, and, for most of his life, insurance was his profession, and he sold insurance like he was a minister — he was protecting people."
"He passed away a month short of turning 101, and people were coming up to me in tears after he passed and telling stories about how he had helped them when they were really in need," Gere continued. "Not just physically or with money but giving them light and a sense of hope and belonging."

Gere, a longtime Buddhist, has found a similar spiritual guide in the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. The "Pretty Woman" actor serves as an executive producer on "Wisdom of Happiness," a 2024 documentary about the Tibetan Buddhist leader (the film is being screened in U.S. theaters on Oct. 16).
"Even from the first time I met him, he's completely simple and direct and honest. There's no pretense about him whatsoever," Gere said. "So, it's like talking to a favorite uncle or your idealized version of your dad or a college professor who you thought was just the greatest guy in the world."
He added, "I don't think His Holiness would want to be romanticized. I certainly have seen him when he's frustrated and even flashed anger. ... But these are moments that come and go quickly, and there's no residue left behind. And that's the difference between His Holiness and us. With him, it's just a moment, it's burned and cleaned and he's right back into, 'I'm here for everyone, completely.'"

Richard Gere says Diane Keaton 'took care' of him while making 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar'
Like many of his Hollywood peers, Gere has a soft spot for Diane Keaton.
Keaton, who reportedly died Oct. 11 of pneumonia at age 79, costarred with Gere in the 1977 drama "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" and 2023's "Maybe I Do." During an Oct. 16 appearance on the "Today" show, Gere shared that he hadn't seen Keaton in "a long time."
In "Mr. Goodbar," Gere played Tony Lopanto, the abusive lover of schoolteacher Theresa Dunn, a character inspired by the real-life 1973 murder of New York City teacher Roseann Quinn.

"That was a difficult film, this very kind of raw, sexual film," Gere reflected. "And she's pretty shy and skittish. And I was, too. That was my second film."
The Richard Brooks-directed film, which also starred Tuesday Weld and William Atherton, went on to earn Keaton a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a drama in 1978.
"We kind of took care of each other, getting through these kind of challenging physical scenes with each other," Gere continued. "But I remember just how sweet and gentle she was and how real. And I think anyone who's ever worked with her (is) just like, 'This is a real person.'"
