Kathy Griffin dishes to PEOPLE about what goes down at her famous salon parties at her home in Malibu, Calif.

She reveals the party tip the late Gloria Vanderbilt gave her

She also says why it's important to her that her guests don't change their seating placements

Kathy Griffin is lifting the curtain on her famous salon parties.

The comedian, 64, often shares glimpses of the gatherings at her Malibu, Calif., home on Instagram, and now she's dishing all the details about what exactly goes down during them.

"Honey, those parties give me life," Griffin tells PEOPLE.

Griffin says a party tip she learned from the late Gloria Vanderbilt was to always have a "guest of honor."

"She said, 'When there's a guest of honor, it makes the other people behave better,'" Griffin recalls.

Griffin — who faced a firestorm of controversy that followed the infamous 2017 photoshoot depicting her holding President Donald Trump's severed head — usually likes her guest of honor to be "someone who's been through the mill, as I used to say."

"Because of my political scandal I know what it's like to have the world hate you," she explains.

During the cocktail portion of the evening, Griffin allows "people to just mix and mingle and talk to whoever they want and take out their phones and take pictures."

But when they sit down at the dinner table, they are not able to take out their cellphones or move the seating place cards.

"I cast these parties like it's a play," Griffin says. "I put this introverted lawyer who has never heard of anyone next to Sia, and then I usually make Sia burst into song, which she has been kind enough to do. It creates this conversation where only one person can talk at a time."

At the table, Griffin makes "everyone go around the table and give their bona fides."

"I say, 'Don't assume that everyone knows who you are. You're not all celebrities,'" she says. "I like to put in real people and throw in a couple celebrities."

They even have to ask for permission to go to the bathroom.

"I rule with an iron fist," she jokes.

Griffin, who recently released her new comedy special My Life on the PTSD List on YouTube, will next kick off her new comedy tour, New Face, New Tour – a reference to her recent facelift — in Las Vegas on Nov. 8.
