Kristen Wiig didn't know she had a hit on her hands with 2011's *Bridesmaids* until a few weeks after opening weekend.

The *Palm Royale *star recently appeared on Amy Poehler's *Good Hang* podcast, where Poehler asked Wiig to reflect on the movie's release and eventual success.

"I remember after opening weekend, they were like, 'Well, we tried,'" the *Ghostbusters* actress recalled. "And we were like, 'Sorry.'"

Wiig added, "We just thought, like, that was it. And then I think just more and more people kept seeing it and then it kind of happened later."

As Wiig put it, the film was a "grower," and it eventually surpassed *Knocked Up *as producer Judd Apatow's highest-grossing movie.

*Bridesmaids *director Paul Feig shared last year that he felt pressure to ensure the film was a success. He said on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's *Dinner's on Me* podcast that the movie was "predicted to not do well right up until the day of release."

Feig said he was "told for months, 'Another movie starring women all hinges on the success of this.' And it's like, 'Really? So I'm just about to kill movies for women.'"

*Bridesmaids* went on to earn more than $300 million worldwide and snagged two Academy Award nominations — one for Best Original Screenplay for Wiig and Annie Mumolo, and another for Melissa McCarthy in the Best Supporting Actress category. It is regarded as barrier-breaking for female-led comedies.

"It still remains a lot of people's favorite comedy and it's still a spec for what it looks like to have a bunch of women in a film together writing their own material," Poehler told Wiig.
