Hollywood lost one of its brightest stars when Kelly Preston died at age 57.

On July 12, 2020, the actress — known for her roles in many beloved films and TV shows throughout the '80s and '90s like For Love and Honor, Twins, Jerry Maguire and Addicted to Love — died following a private two-year diagnosis with breast cancer.

Though she enjoyed a successful career on-screen, Preston also cherished a rich personal life with her husband of nearly 30 years, Oscar-nominated actor John Travolta, with whom she shared three children.

"I experience bliss a lot, and it's always when I'm with my kids and husband and we're all together alone," Preston told PEOPLE in 2018. "As a family, it doesn't get better than that."

As we mark the fifth anniversary of her death, here's a look back at Preston's life through photos.

Preston eventually joined the cast of 1986's SpaceCamp, where she met her first husband, Kevin Gage. The pair married in 1985, the same year they met on set, but they divorced in 1987.

Throughout the rest of the decade, Preston starred in the films 52 Pick-Up (1986), A Tiger's Tale (1987), Twins (1988) and The Experts (1989). She first met her costar and future husband, Travolta, on the set of The Experts.

On New Year's Eve 1991, Travolta got down on one knee inside the Palace Hotel restaurant in Gstaad, Switzerland, and proposed with a six-carat yellow-and-white diamond ring.

Preston was two months pregnant with the couple's son Jett when they got married on Sept. 5, 1991. They said their "I dos" in an unannounced ceremony at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris.

They later got married for a second time on U.S. soil in Daytona Beach, Fla. Preston and Travolta welcomed Jett in 1992.

Proud mom Preston celebrated her daughter's rise as an actress on Instagram, writing, "Still in absolute awe of my stunning daughter @ella.travolta I just re-watched all of her interviews this past week doing press for #thepoisonrose and she has jumped into 'the family business' as an absolute natural."

During an episode of the U.K. talk show Loose Women in 2021, Phillips recalled Preston kept her breast-cancer diagnosis private throughout filming.

"She was so bloomin' beautiful and so vibrant, and you would never have known. She was so professional," Phillips said.

When Travolta shared the movie trailer on Instagram, he paid tribute to his wife with heartfelt words: "Off the Rails is Kelly's last film — she was very proud of it and of all of the wonderful talent that she got to work with in it."

Douglas A. McIntyreJuly 13, 2025 at 12:14 AM

When Beyond Meat (NASDAQ: BYND) went public, there was a broad belief that people wanted meatless meat. It was healthier than meat. It was better for the environment. Beef cattle give off huge amounts of methane. McDonald's even partnered with Beyond Meat to create a McPlant sandwich.

Key Points -

People Don't Want Meatless Meat

Beyond Meat's Stock Has Collapsed

Take this quiz to see if you're on track to retire. (sponsored)

Beyond Meat went public on May 2, 2019. The shares were priced at $25. The stock rose 166% on the first day of trading. That broke a record which had lasted almost two decades.

In the last five years, Beyond Meat's stock is down 97%. The S&P 500 is 97% higher. Beyond Meat is one of those companies that should close. Its business model is a failure

Beyond Meat encountered several hurdles. Unlike hamburger meat, it was not found in every grocery store and supermarket in America. In other words, many people who wanted it had to go out of their way.

Beyond Meat was expensive. As CNBC reported in 2021, "Big meat manufacturers have been producing animal meat products for years at a large scale and keeping prices low. Plant-based companies don't have the same economies of scale." Beyond Meat tried to control its expenses when demand faltered. In 2022, its COO and CFO left. The company cut 20% of its staff.

The lack of demand has shown up in Beyond Meat's numbers. The company continues to shrink. Revenue in the most recent quarter dropped 9% from the same period ago to a tiny $69 million. Beyond Meat posted a net loss of $53 million, compared to a loss of $54 million.

Beyond Meat's balance sheet is a mess. It has $1,142,459 in convertible senior notes, net, at the end of the period. The company's future seems to be based on how much it can reduce expenses and not whether people want its products.

Where Will Visa Be in 5 Years?

Main Image

-

 • Where Will Visa Be in 5 Years?

Neil Patel, The Motley FoolJuly 12, 2025 at 6:30 AM

Key Points -

Thanks to the growth of cashless transactions, Visa will continue to put up solid revenue gains.

Being entrenched in how money flows between stakeholders, coupled with a powerful network effect, gives Visa tremendous staying power.

The stock has underperformed in the past five years -- a trend that's likely to continue.

10 stocks we like better than Visa ›

Chances are, that in your wallet, you have a credit or debit card that sports the Visa (NYSE: V) name and logo on it. That's how ubiquitous this leading payments processing business has become. It has a presence in more than 200 countries and territories, facilitating the smooth functioning of our economy.

Visa shares have crushed the market since their initial public offering in 2008. However, the financial stock hasn't outperformed the S&P 500 in the past five years. As of July 8, Visa shares are up 83% since the same date in 2020.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue »

The future could prove to be better or worse. Where will Visa be in five years?

Touchless checkout with Visa card at POS system.

Benefiting from a powerful secular trend

One clear reason that Visa is a great business is because it has registered steady growth over the years. Between Q2 2015 and Q2 2025 (ended March 31), the company's net revenue increased at an annualized pace of 10.9%. It's not unreasonable to expect this type of growth to continue indefinitely.

Visa benefits from the rising adoption of cashless transactions across the globe. The business doesn't make money when cash or checks are used as a form of payment. However, when people pay for things with credit or debit cards, Visa collects a tiny fee. This amounts to massive revenue, to the tune of $9.6 billion in the latest fiscal quarter.

Visa processed a jaw-dropping $3.9 trillion in payment volume in Q1. This figure was substantially greater than that of its industry peer, Mastercard.

Don't worry about disruption

Thanks to technology, it seems the economy is constantly changing. This creates a difficult environment for businesses to not only operate in, but to develop staying power.

The forces of disruption are always something to worry about, but with Visa, investors should keep calm.

This company benefits from a network effect. It has 4.8 billion active cards in use, accepted at more than 150 million merchant locations. The more cards there are, the more value merchants find in Visa, because there's a huge pool of customers. And since Visa is widely accepted, people are incentivized to have one of these cards in their wallet.

Unless a new payment platform came about that was 10 times better than the current system, I see minimal threat of Visa being disrupted. For consumers, merchants, and banks, Visa just works. This introduces trust among all these stakeholders.

Five years from now, Visa will still be thriving and dominating the global payments landscape. This is despite the rise of fintech platforms and stablecoins.

Can Visa beat the market?

Between now and 2030, I'm confident that shares of Visa will be higher than they are today. That belief stems from the company's impressive bottom-line trajectory.

In the past five years, adjusted earnings per share (EPS) have climbed at a compound annual rate of 14.7%. Wall Street consensus analyst estimates call for adjusted EPS to grow at a yearly clip of 12.6% from fiscal 2024 to fiscal 2027. I believe a double-digit gain is reasonable throughout the rest of this decade and beyond.

Any investor should be pleased if a business can increase its earnings power going forward. However, this favorable trend doesn't mean the stock in question will beat the market. It's critical to assess the market's expectations. In Visa's case, the current price-to-earnings ratio of 35.6 is near a three-year high, which is not a compelling entry point.

This stock has been a huge market outperformer since 2008. But looking over the next five years, I expect a similar story as the last five: Visa probably won't do better than the S&P 500.

Should you invest $1,000 in Visa right now?

Before you buy stock in Visa, consider this:

The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Visa wasn't one of them. The 10 stocks that made the cut could produce monster returns in the coming years.

Consider when Netflix made this list on December 17, 2004... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $674,432!* Or when Nvidia made this list on April 15, 2005... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you'd have $1,005,854!*

Now, it's worth noting Stock Advisor's total average return is 1,049% — a market-crushing outperformance compared to 180% for the S&P 500. Don't miss out on the latest top 10 list, available when you join Stock Advisor.

See the 10 stocks »

*Stock Advisor returns as of July 7, 2025

Neil Patel has no position in any of the stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool has positions in and recommends Mastercard and Visa. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Schumer demands RFK Jr. declare measles emergency, saying he 'walked' US into outbreak

Main Image

-

 • Schumer demands RFK Jr. declare measles emergency, saying he 'walked' US into outbreak

Cybele Mayes-Osterman, USA TODAY July 13, 2025 at 12:57 AM

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declare a nationwide emergency over spiking measles cases, accusing him of fueling the outbreak by dismantling public health and undermining trust in vaccines.

"Under your tutelage as Secretary, you have undermined vaccines, gutted public health funding, and dismantled core federal protections meant to keep Americans safe," Schumer wrote in a July 11 letter.

"You have walked our country into the nation's largest measles outbreak in 33 years," he added.

Measles cases skyrocket, especially in unvaccinated

A quarter century after measles were eradicated in the U.S., cases have skyrocketed this year, reaching 1,288 confirmed cases across 39 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Three people have died this year. Officials say almost nine in ten of the cases are spread across New Mexico and Texas, the site of a Mennonite community that became the initial hub of the outbreak earlier this year.

Most cases – 65% – are in people 19 years old and younger, and the vast majority – 92% – are unvaccinated people.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fired all 17 members of a vaccine advisory panel, replacing them with some vaccine skeptics.

The outbreak has turned attention and heavy criticism from health experts towards Kennedy's vaccine skepticism and baseless claims that vaccines are dangerous and ineffective. Kennedy has said the measles vaccine weakens over time – a claim disputed by scientists – and that "we can't rely simply on the vaccine" to address the outbreak.

He has also downplayed the measles outbreak, saying more focus should be turned on chronic diseases like diabetes and autism instead.

In May, Kennedy directed the CDC to find new "scientific process" for treating measles and other diseases with drugs and vitamins. Although vaccines would still be recommended as the best way to prevent the disease, some "may choose not to vaccinate."

More: Measles was eradicated in the US 25 years ago. This week, cases reached a new high.

Kennedy fired all 17 members of a vaccine advisory last month, refilling it with some vaccine skeptics who have announced their first priority would be retooling vaccine recommendations for children.

Kennedy's drastic cuts to department programs and slashing of thousands of workers at the department have sparked alarm from public health experts and outrage from Democratic lawmakers. Kennedy said in April he would sack 10,000 Health and Human Services employees as part of the Trump administration's efforts to downsize the federal workforce.

Since then, the department has faced a myriad of legal challenges, most recently from top medical organizations over Kennedy dropping the COVID vaccine from the list of recommended shots for children and pregnant women.

Schumer is the latest Democrat on Capitol Hill to upbraid Kennedy in recent days over the measles outbreak.

"We have a record-breaking number of measles cases in America," Sen. Patty Murray, D-WA, wrote on X, accusing Kennedy of filling the vaccine panel with "unvetted vaccine skeptics."

"Where is our public hearing on this crisis?"

The measles vaccine is 97% effective at preventing the disease when administered in the recommended two doses, according to the CDC.

Since the start of the COVID pandemic, when skepticism of vaccines surged, buoyed by online conspiracies and distrust of public health institutions, measles vaccinations have dropped across the nation.

Auburn basketball star Tahaad Pettiford was arrested early Saturday morning in Alabama on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office recent arrests database.

Pettiford, 19, was booked into the Lee County Jail at 12 a.m. on Saturday before being released on a $1,000 bond.

"We are aware of the situation, and we will handle internally with Tahaad and his family," Auburn men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement to Yahoo Sports. "We take these matters seriously and will learn and grow from it moving forward."

Pettiford's arrest comes less than two months after he announced he was withdrawing from the NBA draft and returning to Auburn for his sophomore season. The 6-foot-1 point guard averaged 11.6 points and 3.0 assists as a freshman, helping lead the Tigers to an SEC regular season title, a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and a Final Four appearance.

Had Pettiford remained in the 2025 NBA Draft, he was projected to be selected somewhere in the late first or second round. He instead returned to Auburn in hopes of solidifying himself as a 2026 first-round pick while capitalizing on college basketball's soaring NIL market.

"I was happy to go through the process, getting feedback from NBA teams," Pettiford told ESPN in late May. "Going back to Auburn is a better situation for me. I see myself being a higher pick next year. It wasn't 100% this year, so I didn't want to take that chance."

Workers sit alongside trailers as work progresses on a new migrant detention center dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," at Dade-Collier Training and Transition facility in the Florida Everglades, Friday, July 4, 2025, in Ochopee, Fla. (AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell)

OCHOPEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida lawmakers took a state-arranged tour of the new Everglades immigration detention center on Saturday after some were blocked earlier from viewing the remote facility that officials have dubbed " Alligator Alcatraz."

Democratic and Republican state legislators and members of Congress were heading into the facility Saturday morning. So many politicians turned up that they were split into multiple groups to tour the 3,000-bed detention center that the state rapidly built on an isolated airstrip surrounded by swampland.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and fellow Republicans have touted the makeshift detention center — an agglomeration of tents, trailers and temporary buildings constructed in a matter of days — as an efficient and get-tough response to President Donald Trump's call for mass deportations. The first detainees arrived July 3, after Trump toured and praised the facility.

Described as temporary, the detention center is meant to help the Republican president's administration reach its goal of boosting the United States' migrant detention capacity from 41,000 people to at least 100,000. The Florida facility's remote location and its name — a nod to the notorious Alcatraz prison that once housed federal inmates in California — are meant to underscore a message of deterring illegal immigration.

Ahead of the facility's opening, state officials said detainees would have access to medical care, consistent air conditioning, a recreation yard, attorneys and clergy members.

But detainees and their relatives and advocates have told The that conditions are awful, with worm-infested food, toilets overflowing onto floors, mosquitoes buzzing around the fenced bunks, and air conditioners that sometimes shut off in the oppressive South Florida summer heat. One man told his wife that detainees go days without getting showers.

Florida Division of Emergency Management spokesperson Stephanie Hartman called those descriptions "completely false," saying detainees always get three meals a day, unlimited drinking water, showers and other necessities.

"The facility meets all required standards and is in good working order," she said.

Five Democratic state lawmakers tried to visit the site when it opened July 3 but said they were denied access. The state subsequently arranged Saturday's tour.

The lawmakers have sued over the denial, saying that DeSantis' administration is impeding lawmakers' oversight authority. A DeSantis spokesperson has called the lawsuit "dumb."

As Democratic officials headed into the facility, they said they expected to be given a sanitized and limited view.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told reporters the lawmakers came anyway because they wanted to ask questions and get a sense of the structure and conditions.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Russia's foreign minister on Saturday warned the U.S., South Korea and Japan against forming a security partnership targeting North Korea as he visited his country's ally for talks on further solidifying their booming military and other cooperation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke at North Korea's eastern Wonsan city, where he met the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, and conveyed greetings from President Vladimir Putin.

Relations between Russia and North Korea have been flourishing in recent years, with North Korea supplying troops and ammunition to support Russia's war against Ukraine in return for military and economic assistance. That has raised concerns among South Korea, the U.S. and others that Russia might also transfer to North Korea sensitive technologies that can increase the danger of its nuclear and missile programs.

Speaking with reporters after a meeting with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui, Lavrov accused the U.S., South Korea and Japan of what he called their military buildups around North Korea.

"We warn against exploiting these ties to build alliances directed against anyone, including North Korea and, of course, Russia," he said, according to Russia's state Tass news agency.

The U.S., South Korea and Japan have been expanding or restoring their trilateral military exercises in response to North Korea's advancing nuclear program. On Friday, the three countries held a joint air drill involving U.S. nuclear-capable bombers near the Korean Peninsula, as their top military officers met in Seoul and urged North Korea to cease all unlawful activities that threaten regional security.

North Korea views major U.S.-led military drills as invasion rehearsals. It has long argued that it's forced to develop nuclear weapons to defend itself from U.S. military threats.

Lavrov said Russia understands North Korea's decision to seek nuclear weapons.

"The technologies used by North Korea are the result of the work of its own scientists. We respect North Korea's aspirations and understand the reasons why it is pursuing nuclear development," Lavrov said, according to Tass.

During their meeting, Choe reiterated that North Korea "unconditionally" supports Russia's fight against Ukraine, as Lavrov repeated Russia's gratitude for the contribution that North Korean troops made in efforts to repel a Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk border region.

Wonsan city, the meeting venue, is where North Korea recently opened a mammoth beach resort that it says can accommodate nearly 20,000 people.

In his comments at the start of his meeting with Choe, Lavrov said that "I am sure that Russian tourists will be increasingly eager to come here. We will do everything we can to facilitate this, creating conditions for this, including air travel," according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone is at the center of Kim's push to boost tourism as a way to improve his country's troubled economy. However, prospects for the tourist complex aren't clear, as North Korea appears unlikely to fully reopen its borders and embrace Western tourists anytime soon.

Jack McKessy, USA TODAYJuly 13, 2025 at 1:24 AM

Ndamukong Suh is officially calling it a career.

The 13-year NFL veteran announced his retirement with a social media post on Saturday morning.

The announcement comes one year after the death of Suh's father, who the five-time Pro Bowler calls "my first coach, my greatest teacher, and the man who shaped not just my mindset, but my mission."

"Before he passed," Suh wrote in his post, "he gave me one final piece of advice, 'It's time to let football go. You've done everything you set out to do. Now it's time for the next chapter.'

"That conversation stayed with me. So today, one year later, I'm honoring that wish."

July 12, 2024 was the hardest day of my life. It's the day I said goodbye to my father, the man who raised me, shaped me, challenged me, and believed in me before I believed in myself. He wasn't just a dad. He was my idol, my coach, and my anchor. He taught me what it meant to… pic.twitter.com/WkefQaDrsQ

ANOTHER FORMER LION RETIRES: Center Frank Ragnow hangs up his cleats: 'It's time to prioritize my health'

Ndamukong Suh stats

Suh had a prolific career across his 13 years with five different teams: the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.

The former All-Pro made a name for himself early in his career for his aggressive, physical play style that made him something of an antagonist to opposing teams. In 2012, The Sporting News polled 103 NFL players and found that Suh was the "dirtiest" player in the league when he received 32 votes, 13 more than second-place finisher Richie Incognito.

Between 2010 and 2022, Suh tallied 600 tackles – 130 for a loss – 71.5 sacks, 38 pass deflections, five forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, three fumble-return touchdowns, an interception and a safety.

Suh's best years were his first five seasons in Detroit, where he earned four Pro Bowl nods, three first-team All-Pro honors and one second-team All-Pro nomination. He also won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in a 2010 season that included 66 tackles, 10 sacks, a fumble returned for a touchdown and his lone career interception.

In 2020, Suh was voted to be part of the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team alongside fellow defensive tackles Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox and Geno Atkins.

Ndamukong Suh launches podcast

In his retirement announcement, Suh went on to say his next step is sitting behind a microphone, sharing financial advice on his new podcast with The Athletic: "No Free Lunch."

"I want to share what I've learned; especially with athletes, entrepreneurs, and young people navigating life and money," he wrote. "(The podcast)'s about real conversations, real strategy, and real education. Because freedom doesn't come from fame, it comes from knowledge and how you move."

It's an interesting career pivot, but not a huge surprise for Suh.

The 38-year-old grew up learning about investment from his parents, who owned and maintained "a small portfolio" of real estate properties, according to Forbes. Suh has even become close friends with Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, dating back to a meeting he requested with the Omaha native after his final season at Nebraska.

"I typically talk to (Buffett) about once or twice a quarter," Suh told Forbes in 2021.

The first episode of Suh's podcast came out on July 1 and featured former WNBA superstar Candace Parker.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck are hitting a home run on family nights!

Just over 10 years after announcing their divorce, the A-list exes were pictured sitting front row with their two youngest children during the Boston Red Sox's winning game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on July 11. Their eldest child, 19-year-old Violet Affleck, wasn't pictured at the ballgame.

"Great Red Sox family right there, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and their kids," NESN commentator Dave O'Brien said during a broadcast in a clip shared by the official Major League Baseball X account.

In the clip, the Oscar-winning actor and "Deadpool & Wolverine" star were engaged in a conversation before the former couple, seated together in between their children, seemingly flashed soft smiles at the camera. Affleck is a longtime Red Sox fan and grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's daughter Violet graduates: See the emotional reaction

Garner and ex-husband Affleck were married from 2005 to 2018. Last year, actress and singer Jennifer Lopez, 55, filed to divorce Affleck, 52, in Los Angeles Superior Court. Affleck and Lopez were previously together before the actor and Garner's pairing.

Since their split a decade ago, the pair have emerged as one of Hollywood's healthiest examples of "conscious uncoupling," a term coined by Affleck ex and Garner friend Gwyneth Paltrow.

The "Gigli" stars first met on set of the film, which was released a year later in 2003. After 10 years of marriage, the duo told USA TODAY in a June 2015 statement that "we go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time."

When Affleck accepted the best picture Academy Award for "Argo" in 2013, he received some backlash for comments about Garner: "I want to thank you for working on marriage for 10 Christmases," he said from the stage. "It's good, it is work, but it's the best kind of work, and there's no one I'd rather work with."

But Garner later defended her then-husband, telling The Telegraph that "I know Ben, I knew he meant it as the hugest, warmest compliment in the world.

"I think he was saying, 'Look, what we have is really real and I value it above all and I'm in it with you and I know you are in it with me.' That's the way I took it," Garner said.
