Pizza Huts of yesteryear were magical places. You sat at a table with your family under a stained-glass Tiffany lamp and ordered several pan pizzas from a waitress, treating yourself to the salad bar while you waited for your pie to arrive. Unfortunately, sit-down Pizza Hut locations become rarer by the day. As consumer appetites shifted toward take-out and delivery, the red-roofed chain shifted its priorities away from dine-in service. Then the pandemic all but sealed the deal, with many formerly full-service Pizza Hut locations closing their dining rooms.

Much like Starbucks, Pizza Hut is banking on a big redesign to regain its top spot in the pizza kingdom. But rather than leaning into the brand's nostalgia, Pizza Hut is emulating modern fast casual leaders like Chipotle and Cava.

CNN went inside a remodeled Pizza Hut store, and it looks nothing like the one from your childhood. This store was designed for people on the go. In addition to a drive-thru and self-serve ordering kiosks, the store also features a central kitchen, where customers can see staff making their pizza, reminiscent of the assembly line at Chipotle. It also has a stack of heated shelves storing carryout orders for easy pick-up, reminiscent of Little Caesars' Pizza Portal. "The time is right when we think about a post-pandemic world that has become much more digital," a Pizza Hut exec told CNN, explaining the logic behind the redesign.

For those hankering for an analog Pizza Hut experience, though, not all is lost. The chain still operates several Pizza Hut Classic locations across the country, featuring the iconic architecture on the outside and the red booths with checkered tablecloths on the inside. "It's just like I remember," food blogger Beauty and the Beets wrote, "with a jukebox too!"

Explore More: 4 Low-Risk Ways To Build Your Savings in 2025

So which foreign cars are now worth their price tag? And which ones have improved the most since the last time you bought a vehicle?

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

Hyundai Tucson -

2025 starting price: $28,705

It takes a long time for car manufacturers to improve their brand image. For decades, Hyundai has offered a 10-year powertrain warranty to convince consumers it produced reliable, high-quality vehicles. And over the last decade or two, it's finally started convincing the crowds.

"Twenty years ago, Hyundai cars were basic, but now models like the Tucson offer good build quality, strong warranties and more modern designs," said Gavin Yi, CEO of auto part manufacturer Yijin Hardware. "They provide more value for the price, better safety, lower maintenance costs and new features that make them great choices for drivers who want a car that lasts a long time."

In fact, U.S. News & World Report named Hyundai the best brand for SUVs in 2025.

Check Out: I'm a Car Expert: 5 Most-Improved Luxury Cars That Are Now Worth Your Money

Hyundai Sonata -

2025 starting price: $26,900

Hyundai makes more than just great SUVs, however.

Alex Black, chief marketing officer at vehicle background reporting site EpicVIN, can't speak highly enough of Hyundais. "At the beginning of the 2000s, everyone thought they were cheap vehicles you only bought because you were trying to pinch pennies. Now? They produce cars that truly hold their own against Toyota and Honda — and in some cases like the Sonata, outscores them in features, style and warranty," he said.

Kia Telluride -

2025 starting price: $36,390

The other South Korean car manufacturer to make huge strides in reliability, features and design is Kia. The three-row SUV ranks among the best in its class, without the pretentious price tag.

"The Kia Telluride is another example of a Korean car that has started to outshine its Japanese competitors," Black said. "You're really getting bang for the buck these days."

Kelley Blue Book went so far as to award the Telluride 4.8 stars and name it among the best three-row SUVs.

Toyota RAV4 -

2025 starting price: $29,550

Toyota has made dependable cars for decades. But in the last decade or two, it's built on its reputation for reliability by adding in more innovative features.

"Today's RAV4 has much better technology and safety features, and is just plain nicer to drive," Yi said.

Subaru Outback -

2025 starting price: $29,995

As with Toyota, Subaru's history of making quality cars goes back decades. But that doesn't mean they were always a dream to drive.

Black looks back over the last decade or two and sees huge strides by the Outback in particular. "Dependability increased, and their all-wheel drives are still the best, at least for rural or cold-climate areas. Older Outbacks were spartan, but newer ones are full of bells and whistles and make great all-around vehicles," he said.

I Asked ChatGPT: Should Billionaires Pay More in Taxes?

-

 • I Asked ChatGPT: Should Billionaires Pay More in Taxes?

Jordan RosenfeldJuly 13, 2025 at 12:01 AM

©Shutterstock.com

With the astronomical earnings that billionaires make on their investments alone, it's easy to imagine their tax bills are just as huge. And yet, it turns out that's not really the case.

In fact, research published in 2021 by White House economists has shown that, at least as far back as 2018, the 400 wealthiest families in the U.S. paid an average 8.2% federal income tax rate, which is lower than many middle-income families.

GOBankingRates decided to see if ChatGPT could analyze the fairness of what billionaires pay in taxes as compared to the average American. We asked: "Should billionaires pay more in taxes?" Here's what it said.

Check Out: I Asked ChatGPT How Much Money I'll Need To Retire in 5 Years: Here's What It Said

Read Next: 6 Subtly Genius Moves All Wealthy People Make With Their Money

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

The Analysis

ChatGPT didn't give a flat answer right away. First it pointed out how billionaires primarily accumulate their wealth, which is through "unrealized capital gains" which are not taxed until they're realized, or sold, and this allows billionaires to pay a lower "effective tax rate than their rates otherwise suggest."

To explain realized versus unrealized capital gains more specifically, ChatGPT broke it down like so: "You buy a stock for $100. Over time, its value rises to $150. That extra $50 is your unrealized gain. It remains 'unrealized' (and untaxed) until you actually sell the stock."

So it's only when billionaires sell an investment that they pay capital gains taxes, but they can meanwhile earn compound interest on their investments in amounts the average person could never dream of and not have to pay taxes on that.

ChatGPT shared that Elon Musk paid $455 million on $1.52 billion in income between 2014 and 2018, "but then legally avoided federal income tax in 2018," because he could take advantage of complex tax strategies that allow the "ultra-wealthy" to avoid them. His personal tax information for any year beyond 2018 is not publicly available but his net worth has only grown.

Learn More: If Wealth Was Evenly Distributed Across America, How Much Money Would Every Person Have?

In Favor of Raising Their Taxes

ChatGPT made some arguments in favor of raising billionaires' taxes. For one thing, there's major wealth inequality, with billionaires' wealth having grown "massively" while the average American's has "stagnated," it wrote. Given that the minimum wage is still below $10 in many states, that's a good point.

Additionally, from a public good standpoint, simply imposing a 2% annual wealth tax on billionaires could raise billions in global taxes that could fund numerous programs and initiatives from healthcare and education to climate initiatives and more.

And while many billionaires do, indeed, donate to charitable causes and even have foundations that do charitable work, it's unlikely many of them will rush to find ways to give up their earnings.

Counterarguments

From the average American's standpoint, taxing billionaires more seems like a good idea — after all, they have so much money they can spare it and still be billionaires. However, ChatGPT pointed out that wealth taxes tend to be unpopular and could "discourage investment." They also require a congressional act to pass.

Not to mention, plenty of billionaires have offshore tax shelters and other "wealth defense tactics" that might still get around paying their share.

The Verdict

Yes, ChatGPT suggested that there's plenty of justification for increasing taxes on billionaires, but it pointed out that "policymakers must balance fairness with economic impacts, enforceability and legal constraints."

In the interim, ChatGPT suggested alternatives like minimum income taxes or raising capital gains/tax enforcement.

US online spending surges $24.1 billion as steep discounts boost sales, Adobe says

 • US online spending surges $24.1 billion as steep discounts boost sales, Adobe says

July 12, 2025 at 9:30 PM

(Reuters) -Online spending soared $24.1 billion across U.S. retailers during the stretch from July 8 to 11 – dubbed "Black Friday in Summer", outpacing Adobe Analytics' prior forecast, as eager shoppers rushed to snap up deep discounts on back-to-school essentials.

Retailers recorded online sales growth of 30.3% during events that included Amazon Prime Day, Adobe said on Saturday, compared with its projections of 28.4%.

Online retail sales in the U.S. rose 11% to $14.2 billion a year ago.

The Prime Day event has also been cemented as a "back-to-school" shopping moment, as consumers jumped on early deals to stock up on essentials and get ahead of the back-to-school rush, Adobe said.

Several major retailers including e-commerce giant Amazon.com, Walmart, Target as well as Best Buy have been launching deal events with strong discounts, encouraging shoppers to trade up on expensive items they might normally pass on.

Amazon.com extended its sales window to 96 hours, up from the typical 48, featuring aggressive promotions on categories ranging from apparel to electronics.

A wave of enticing deals comes at a time when heightened trade tensions amid the Trump administration's volatile tariff policies have rattled consumers and businesses, and as the new August 1 deadline for countries to renegotiate trade agreements with the United States looms.

According to the report, shopping on mobile was the dominant transaction channel during the Prime Day event, driving 53.2% of online sales, above Adobe's forecast of 52.5%.

According to Adobe, overall discounts across U.S. retailers were between 11% and 24%, compared with the prior forecast range of 10% to 24%.

Apparel had the biggest deals at 24%, compared with 20% last year, while electronics were at 23%, similar to last year.

Texas flooding death toll rises amid weekend flash flooding risk

 • Texas flooding death toll rises amid weekend flash flooding risk

Jeanine Santucci, USA TODAY July 12, 2025 at 9:19 PM

Over a week since an inundated Guadalupe River sent floodwaters tearing through homes and youth camps in Texas, optimism for rescuing any of the dozens of people still missing from Hill Country on Saturday has steadily faded as the death toll continued to rise.

Hundreds of rescuers, many of them volunteers, have scoured miles of destruction for any sign of the missing. But they haven't rescued anyone alive since July 4, the day of the flood, officials in the hardest-hit Kerr County said. Some 160 people are missing from the county alone.

As of the morning of July 12, the death toll had risen to at least 129, with authorities in Kerr and Travis counties reporting more bodies recovered. The toll in Kerr County rose to at least 103, including 67 adults and 36 children, according to the county's Joint Information Center. In Travis County, the toll rose to nine from eight, spokesperson Hector Nieto confirmed to USA TODAY. Officials previously said at least 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic, the beloved all-girls Christian camp, were among the dead.

"I've never seen anything like this, and I've seen a lot of bad ones," President Donald Trump said as he and first lady Melania Trump surveyed the damage on Friday. "It's hard to believe the devastation."

Volunteers expected to help with recovery Saturday

Kerr County said it is expecting a large number of "spontaneous volunteers" to help with recovery efforts on Saturday. Volunteers have been a key part of search and rescue in the days since the flood, with officials sometimes asking volunteers to stay away so qualified personnel can conduct some of the grueling work.

Volunteers are asked to register with Texas Community Recovery and check in at Tivy Antler Stadium in Kerrville before attending a safety briefing.

A person watches as machinery is used to clear debris along the banks of the Guadalupe River after catastrophic floods in Center Point, Texas, July 11, 2025.Officials continue to grapple with question of blame

Officials in Texas have faced relentless questions about what could have been done to prevent the high death toll and short amount of warning time in the Hill Country flooding. In Kerr County, Sheriff Larry Leitha has said he's not dodging the questions, but is focusing on the top priority of locating each missing person and identifying each victim found.

Trump on Friday rejected concerns about whether communities along the Guadalupe River were adequately prepared for the disaster.

"I think everybody did an incredible job under the circumstances," Trump said. "Only a very evil person would ask a question like that."

Gov. Greg Abbott earlier in the week said "blame" was the "word choice of losers."

Is more flooding on the way?

As cleanup and recovery continues in Texas Hill Country, a renewed threat of flash flooding is in store over the weekend, forecasters said. Scattered showers are expected to develop Saturday afternoon and evening in south-central Texas, including parts of areas that already flooded. Heavy rain can quickly run off already wet ground, forecasters said.

In Kerrville, there is about a 35% chance of an inch of rain falling through Sunday morning, the weather service office serving Austin and San Antonio said.

"The expected heavy rainfall totals along with already sensitive, wet antecedent conditions may lead to scattered to potentially numerous instances of flash flooding," the National Weather Service said.

Abbott activated emergency response resources on Friday at the Texas Division of Emergency Management in response to the forecast: "Texas continues to stand ready to deploy all necessary resources to support Texans as severe storms move across our state," he said.

Over 13.5 million people were under flood watches from the National Weather Service across parts of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico on Saturday morning.

How many died in Texas flooding?

Here's a breakdown of the Texas flooding death toll, according to county officials:

Kerr County: 103

Travis County: 9

Kendall County: 8

Burnet County: 5

Williamson County: 3

Tom Green County: 1
