Death is just another character in the Dexter world, but fans are reeling after the loss of an original character who had survived for the show's nearly two-decade run.
On the Aug. 29 episode of Dexter: Resurrection, former Miami police chief Angel Batista (David Zayas) came face-to-face with the Bay Harbor Butcher (Michael C. Hall) one last time, before Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage) killed him.
He was strapped down to Dexter's kill table, but the titular character, of course, couldn't kill him, which led Prater to step in and end his life.
Zayas said he knew that the end was coming for Batista as soon as he heard about the series returning.
"When they called me, they said, 'We're thinking of bringing Dexter back in a resurrection,' and then explained the storyline of the season," the actor told Deadline, revealing he knew "from the beginning" that his character would die this season.

"My first thought was, 'Wow, that's great TV,' and it is. It's great for the story, but it's also bittersweet in that you want to continue telling this story."
"But you know, having a 20-year run is not so bad," Zayas, 63, continued.
In his mind, the way Batista's storyline wrapped up was the only reasonable
"The more I think of everything, the more I understand this was the only way it could have gone down," he told the outlet.
Reflecting more broadly on the role, which he's had since Dexter's 2006 premiere, Zayas said he's "very proud" of Batista.
"This is the best job I've ever had as an actor, because I was able to develop Ángel from A to Z," he said. "I'm very grateful for that opportunity."
He knows better than to think this is definitely his last appearance, though, considering how frequently the dead come back to haunt Dexter.
As Zayas told Variety, "You don't have to be alive to be on the show."

"So there's always that window that keeps me with a positive outlook, because I would be a part of the Dexter universe in any capacity," he admitted. "It's been the best job I've ever had."
