The Sandman is back for one more sleep.
The Netflix adaptation of the critically acclaimed and groundbreaking comic epic first premiered in August 2022. Now, three years later, the surreal fantasy series has awakened to finish the story of Morpheus, a.k.a. Dream (Tom Sturridge), as he rebuilds his kingdom, the Dreaming, while dealing with his family of cosmic siblings known as the Endless.
According to the official synopsis, per Variety, in The Sandman season 2, Dream "must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds."
"To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals," the description continues. "But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything."
The latest season of The Sandman is also the series' last, something showrunner Allan Heinberg said allowed the cast and crew "to prep and plan to use our time and budget to the fullest."
"And to enjoy the process, and each other, as much as possible," he told Tudum. "Since we knew this was going to be the last time we'd all be working together to tell this extraordinary and mad and moving story."

The first six episodes of The Sandman season 2 premiered on July 3.
The second season is being split into two parts or volumes. The first six episodes (Volume 1) premiered on July 3. Volume 2, consisting of episodes 7 through 11, will follow on July 24.
A special bonus episode will then be released on July 31.

The Sandman season 2 has 11 episodes, and a bonus installment, for a total of 12.
When explaining his decision to end the series, Heinberg told Tudum how The Sandman "has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season."
"We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team back together," he continued. "Giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics' loyal readers as well as fans of our show."

When it came to concluding with season 2, The Sandman executive producer, David Goyer, told Variety, "The first season had 11, the second season is 12. When we talked through it, we felt, let's make a slightly bigger Season 2 and take it through to the end."
"There's always the possibility that we could do some of the other spinoff material, if you will," he added.

In June 2025, Netflix revealed that the second season of The Sandman would end with a bonus episode focused on Dream's sister, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste).
The entry is titled "The Sandman Presents: Death: The High Cost of Living," Variety reported. It will adapt the three-issue 1993 limited series by the same name, per Polygon.
One day, every century, Death takes on a mortal form and walks among humans, better to understand them. In the Death: The High Cost of Living comic book, she meets Sexton Furnival (played by Colin Morgan in the Netflix adaptation), a suicidal young man who becomes her companion for the day.
Co-creator Neil Gaiman is an executive producer on the Netflix series and will also be involved in the special add-on.
