- Last American to win Wimbledon: Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton looking to end drought

Jacob Camenker, USA TODAYJuly 8, 2025 at 4:03 AM

Taylor Fritz did something at the 2024 US Open no American man had done since 2009. He made it to the finals of a Grand Slam event.

Fritz was unable to dispatch World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final. The Italian claimed the US Open title with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 straight-set win to give him his second-ever Grand Slam win.

Despite the loss, Fritz continues to be a contender at major events. He hasn't yet broken through for a win, but he is hoping to do so at Wimbledon in 2025.

If Fritz is able to achieve that goal, he would be the first American man to win tennis' oldest major tournament in 25 years. He has already reached the quarterfinals but may have to get through the tournament's top-two seeds – Sinner and reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz – to take home the title.

Fritz won't be he only American man with a chance to lift the trophy. Ben Shelton is also a quarterfinalist at the tournament, marking the 22-year-old's deepest-ever run at Wimbledon.

Meanwhile, Amanda Anisimova is the last American woman standing in the quest to end a nine-year drought since Serena Williams won her final title at the grass-court Grand Slam.

Here's what to know about the history of Americans winners at Wimbledon both in the men's and women's singles tournaments.

Who was last American to win men's Wimbledon title?

Pete Sampras was the last American man to win at Wimbledon. He earned his seventh career title at the event in 2000 with a 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-2 win over Patrick Rafter.

All six of Sampras' wins came in an eight year span from 1993 to 2000. The lone year he failed to win in that span was 1996, when 17th-seed Richard Krajicek won the tournament after eliminating Sampras in the quarterfinal round.

The furthest an American man has made it in Wimbledon since Sampras' 2000 victory is the event final. Andy Roddick achieved that feat in 2004, 2005 and 2009 but finished as the runner-up to Roger Federer in all three championships.

Who was last American to win women's Wimbledon title?

Serena Williams was the last American woman to win the Wimbledon title. She did so in 2016, when she was the draw's top seed, by defeating No. 4 seed Angelique Kerber in straight sets – 7-5, 6-3.

The victory was Williams' second in a row at Wimbledon and seventh overall. It also marked the second-to-last of her 23 career Grand Slam titles; her final major win came at the 2017 Australian Open, when she beat her sister, Venus Williams, in the final – 6-4, 6-4.
